FuelFinder: a weekend with vanilla JS
June 2, 2026
Quick one. I got annoyed at how many taps it takes to find a cheap petrol station near me, so I spent a weekend building FuelFinder — a small JavaScript app that pulls nearby fuel prices and sorts them by whatever you actually care about: price, or distance, or both.
No framework, no build step drama, no backend to speak of. Just geolocation, a public fuel price feed, and enough vanilla JS to render a sortable list without it feeling like 2009. That was deliberate — not every idea needs a full stack behind it, and forcing myself to work without my usual tools is a decent way to remember what they’re actually for.
Is it finished? Not really — the styling is doing its best, and there’s no caching so it hits the price feed more than it should. But it does the one job I built it for, and it lives on GitHub if you want to see how small “useful” can be.
