A few months into agency life
February 10, 2026
A few months into Venture Stream now, and I wanted to write down what actually changed moving from mostly-solo freelance work into an agency, before I forget what it felt like to be new.
The obvious thing: code review. Freelance, the only person checking my work was a client who couldn’t read PHP. Here, someone actually looks at the diff and asks why I did it that way. The first few times that stings a bit. Then you notice how many small bad habits get caught before they become the thing you’re maintaining for two years.
The less obvious thing: scope discipline. On my own projects, “just add it” was always an option because I was the one who’d deal with the consequences. In an agency, someone else owns the client relationship and the timeline, so “just add it” has to go through an actual conversation about time and cost. Frustrating at first, genuinely useful once it clicks — most of my worst freelance scope-creep would never have survived that conversation.
And the thing nobody tells you: you learn the most from the projects that aren’t yours. Watching how someone else structures a Shopify migration, or debugs a checkout issue under actual time pressure, has taught me more in a few months than a lot of solo years did.
